The Grave Dangers Of Drinking Fruit Juice – Medical Researchers Reveal

Researchers have warned consumers against too much consumption of fruit juice to prevent being predisposed to diabetes, heart disease and other ailments.

Two medical researchers writing in one of The Lancet journals argue that because of its high sugar content, fruit juice could be just as bad for us as sugar-sweetened beverages like carbonated drinks and sodas.

Naveed Sattar, professor of Metabolic Medicine, and Dr. Jason Gill, both of the Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences at the University of Glasgow in Scotland, call for the UK government to change the current ‘five-a-day’ guideline to exclude a portion of fruit juice from the list of fruits and vegetable servings that count toward it.

In their paper, published in the The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, they propose that including fruit juice as one of the five a day is “probably counter-productive,” because it leads people to consider fruit juice as a healthy food that does not need to be limited, as is the case with less healthy foods. They also urge food companies to improve container labeling of fruit juices to inform consumers they should drink no more than 150 ml a day of the product.

Fruit juice has come under the spotlight since medical experts recently started looking more closely at the link between high sugar intake and the risk for heart disease.

In 2012, researchers at Harvard reported in the journal Circulation that daily consumption of sugary drinks raised heart disease risk  in men.

Two years earlier, researchers presenting at an American Heart Association conference said Americans’ higher consumption of sugary drinks has led to more diabetes and heart disease over the past decade.

Drama As House Of Reps Member Who Dumped APC Finally Joins PDP

The federal House of Representatives went agog earlier today when a lawmaker, who was a member of the ruling APC identified himself as a member of the PDP.

Speaking while contributing to a motion during a plenary session at the national assembly on Thursday, a lawmaker and member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Jagaba Adams, identified himself as a member of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

The lawker who spoke on the urgent public importance on the need to add Kaduna and Plateau to a list of states under the siege of herdsmen, said: “I am of the Peoples Democratic Party”, a statement which triggered jubilation in the PDP camp.

According to PREMIUM Times, many members of the PDP were seen in jubilation as they congratulated the minority leader, Leo Ogor, who had been away for some time.

The speaker, Yakubu Dogara, who presided over the plenary, however, said as far as the House Was concerned, Jagaba remained a member of the APC until he officially informs the House.

The lawmaker had earlier in 2018 formally dumped Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, and described it as a sinking ship, but did not communicate his decision to the house.

He also did not indicate he was heading to the opposition party. His declaration at the plenary was the first since his resignation from his former party.

Jagaba said he had expected to be expelled from the party in his home state but had since bade the members farewell.

Ritualists Caught Red-handed While Trying To Disappear With Newborn Baby

Some alleged ritualists have been nabbed in the act after they tried to steal a baby who was just one day old.

Men of the Nigeria Police Force

According to a report by PM News, the Police in Bwari, Abuja, on Tuesday arrested two suspects while attempting to steal a day-old-baby from the mother.

The Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) of Bwari Police station, SP Bumi Bulus, who confirmed the arrest, said that investigation on the matter was still ongoing.

He, however, said that the main suspect (herbalist) was as at the time of filing this report still at large.

Mr Husseini Azana, a resident of kuduru community of Bwari Area Council in the FCT and father of the baby, said that he nearly lost his baby to rituals.

Azana, on Tuesday, said that it was only through the divine intervention of God that the child was not stolen, thanking the Nigeria Police for their swift response in arresting the suspects.

He said: “After my wife delivered on Monday a lot of people came to celebrate with us on Tuesday but while I was at my workstation, I was called to come back home urgently.

“My wife then told me that there was a stranger, whom she said came to greet her and collected the baby from her hands while also asking her if she had powder to rub on the baby and she said no.

“Then he gave the baby back to her, went to a shop and bought a powder and attempted to rub on the baby but my wife stopped him and said she did not know him, why will he insisted on rubbing the powder.

“That was when she called me to come and identify the man and by then, the situation had drawn the attention of neighbours, who started questioning him and raising alarm.

“By the time I came, I and my neighbours put pressure on him, he then confessed that it was a nearby herbalist that asked him to come and carry the baby,’’ he said.

Azana added that he did not allow the mob to take the law into their hands, so he called the police who came and took the suspect away with one other that was found at the alleged herbalist shrine.

An eyewitness, Alhaji Nurudeen Zubairu also said that the incident shocked all of them in the neighbourhood.

According to him, when my attention was drawn, I called the father of the child on the phone to come back home urgently.

“We both went to the house to meet the man still standing in the room where the baby was.

“We had to drag him out of the room and asked him who sent him but he kept saying it was somebody.

“I told him he had no right to take someone’s child to another.

“The mother of the baby even told us that when she did not allow him carry the baby the second time, he waited for her to escort some of her visitors outside and he picked the baby again.

“She informed us that it was then she raised her voice asking him where he was taking her baby, he pushed her aside and asked her to keep calm that he was sent to bring the child.

“The thing is, I have heard so many times about the existence of some so-called herbalist in this area but I have not seen them before, yet when the police arrived and arrested him, he was able to take us to the shrine.

“It was there the police picked another person,’’ he said.

Zubairu further said that the suspect was familiar to some of the people in the community.

He added that the matter was in the hands of the police and their statements when they reported at the Bwari Police station.

Following the brutal murder of a bus driver allegedly by Edo police officers, the police commissioner has swung into action.

Edo police vehicle set ablaze

The Police Command in Edo says it has arrested members of its patrol team allegedly responsible for the killing of a commercial driver on Tuesday morning.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Johnson Kokumo, said this in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin.

According to Kokumo, members of the team are currently being investigated and if found culpable, would be made to face the full wrath of the law.

He said the command would not renege on its fight against all forms of human right abuses.

He advised parents, guardians and community leaders to prevail on their children not to take the law into their own hands and allow police investigations into the matter.

“The Edo State Police Command wishes to inform members of the public that the violence by an irate mob and some restive youths as a result of the fatal motor accident allegedly caused by a police patrol team in the early hours of Feb. 6, 2018 has been brought under control.

“Members of the alleged police team have been identified, arrested and currently being investigated.

“If found culpable, they will be made to face the full wrath of the law, as the command will not renege on its fight against all forms of human right abuses.

“We implore all parents and community leaders to prevail on their children and subjects not to take the law into their own hands and allow police investigation into the incident to be concluded.’’

The commissioner further appealed to residents of the state to go about their lawful businesses and refrain from acts likely to cause breakdown of law and order.
